'Boomtown'

'Boomtown'

James McKenzie-Blyth

A spring day in England usually results in mediocre heat, enough sun and vitamin D to loosely top up your tan before heading away to your Spanish timeshare. Abroad, your days are spent sitting around the pool followed by evenings applying Aloe Vera gel as you have underestimated the Mediterranean sun once again.

However, this spring we have been hit with that typically British forecast. Overcast skies, thunderstorms and enough rain to flood Yorkshire once again. So with this unpredictable weather, Flyotw decided to take a leisurely drive down to the Brighton coast and catch up with our good friend, Josh Bevan.

The setting for the day was Josh's delightfully picturesque cliff-side cottage, in Saltdean bordering the edge of Brighton. Saltdean is what you would expect from a quintessentially British seaside town; A cluster of pastel painted cottages sweeping the landscape, accurately pointing out to sea commanding the most stunning of views.

After a short exploration, we came across the abandoned Saltdean Lido. Literally, the 90’s encapsulated into one place. We stood and reflecting upon the times where the sun frenzied British public would descend in unison upon the open-air swimming pool to soak up as much sun as possible.

The lobster red bodies of children wailing, splashing and plunging into the obscenely chlorinated pools. Wrinkly fingers, bloodshot eyes and that one friend with a verruca. A plethora of children leisurely sucking the saturation from a Calypso ice lolly, liquefying to a vial of sugary goodness. Wasps. The scent of factor 50 sun cream lingering, creating oily coloured haze upon the surface of the water.

Back to Josh's quaint abode, we began to record. Josh treated us to a dreamy piece called Cloud 9. A track that brings to light struggles, thoughts and feelings of the journey for success, caught in a perpetual loop where passion meets reality. A process that resonates with Flyotw massively. A process that duels with the heart and the mind. Where you tell yourself to just keep going, have belief in your dreams, no matter what the struggles you face.

This piece simply asks why and so do we. Honestly, we struggle to understand how Josh is not reaping the rewards for his songwriting and his staggeringly beautiful voice. This world is a peculiar place that draws musicality from marketability. Listen to the radio, it is trend driven, exactly like the high street fashion you see. This year we have been treated to pastel colours and overly long t-shirts with too many zips. Next year, crochet shorts and patches. Rant over.

As the evening crept in, we were welcomed by Future Dub Project, a four piece electro-dub noisette who happened to want to record a short piece featuring Josh Bevan. With festival season just around the corner, the squad hyped up the evening with their rendition of "Boomtown Special”.

Drum and Bass has many faces, but it’s a genre of music unlike any other that can exist and deliver just on those two elements with confidence. Anything else is an added bonus.

Personally, Drum and Bass has always conjured up images of an old, rickety, wooden pirate ship rolling and smashing through the waves at high speeds in all weathers. The vessel is Drum and Bass, the high seas are the ravers bouncing about at 160BPM upwards and the crew on board are the influencers, producers, and DJ's. Relentless, unstoppable, always onboard and having a bloody good time.

Exactly like Future Dub Project. A unit, riding the waves, assembling and executing their music full of vigour and energy. Josh compliments their performance like a captain commanding his crew. Those stabby guitar chords, the rolling sub line, and glitchy bass movements. All fundamental ingredients to supply a experience to remember.
